Many people are curious regarding how to plant asparagus. Asparagus are vegetables popular all over the world. They are green, branchlike, herbaceous plants whose tips resemble small spears. They are great for different cuisines but are also used because of their medicinal properties.
Here are some tips on how to plant asparagus at home:
- Select a location where the asparagus plant can grow undisturbed for several years.
- Find a spot where there is direct sunlight. Asparagus grow best if they are exposed to the sun's rays.
- The more organic material the soil, the better it is for asparagus growth.
- Take some asparagus crowns and use these for planting. If you cannot find crowns, they are available in the local nursery.
- The ideal soil temperature for planting begins during the early spring or the late winter.
- In planting, dig a hole that is about 7 inches and place small amounts of compost, ashes, or manure.
- Plant asparagus at least 12 inches apart in different rows. Rows must be at least 4 feet from each other.
- Shoot individual crowns into the holes made, being careful that the foliage is not covered in the process.
- Remove weeds every time it grows. Place some of the leaves or straw used during planting to serve as mulch. This provides the soil with more moisture, prevents soil erosion, gives more nutrition to the soil, and also helps prevent the weeds from growing.
- Water the asparagus to provide at least an inch of water per week. Then water only as necessary or when there is minimal rainfall.
- Do not harvest right away especially during the first year. Give the asparagus roots ample time to grow and become more productive. For the following year, one can harvest those that reached the size of the index finger. In the third year, one can pick out asparagus during the spring for only as long as four weeks and only those that have reach finger sizes. In the next consecutive years, one can fully enjoy harvesting for as long as eight weeks or until the stalks become thin and long.
